Campers should avoid feeding wildlife while out this summer.
According to Marr Park Naturalist Pam Holz, animals like raccoons, skunks and opossums can get used to campers and view scraps they find or that are given to them as a source of food. She explains this leads to atypical behavior, including the loss of their usual fear of humans. Holz adds while we don’t have to worry about bears in this part of the country, it isn’t a good idea to keep food in your tent due to the fact squirrels and chipmunks can chew through the fabric.
