Mid-Prairie and #3 in 2A Durant squared off in a Senior Night doubleheader Wednesday in Kalona to decide the leader of the River Valley Conference south. Mid-Prairie left little doubt as to who the class of the conference was sweeping the Wildcats 10-1 and 3-1. Mid-Prairie got the offense rolling early in game one against all state pitcher Anna Bentley scoring three in the first. Whitney Christiansen, Mid-Prairie’s lone senior, drove in a pair on an RBI single as Emma Troyer and Amber Kral scored. The Hawks added another in the third when Amanda Miller scored on a passed ball. Mid-Prairie stretched the lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Christiansen, continued to make it a memorable night, smacking a two run homer, the first varsity homer of her career. After the game Christiansen talked about the night and the home run.

“Well, at first I thought it was a pop fly, but then as soon as I saw Hannah’s face, I knew it was over. It was a good feeling, especially on senior night,” Christiansen said. “It doesn’t even feel like I am older than them, we get along so well, and we are always together, so it’s really nice to be a part of.”

Durant got on the board against Golden Hawk starter Taylor Kurtz in the sixth when Bentley drove in Aubrey Werthman to make it 6-1 but that’s as close as the Wildcats would get as Mid-Prairie added four in the sixth with an RBI single from Kral and a two run bomb from Taylor Kurtz. Kurtz got the win in the circle for Mid-Prairie going all seven innings, allowing six hits, one run, walking one and striking out three. Christiansen fittingly led the way at the plate on senior night, driving in a team high four on a two for three performance. Kurtz was three for four with two RBI.

In game two Mid-Prairie picked up where they left off at the plate, scoring twice in the first when Emma Troyer singled to drive in Alex Rath and Lexi Duwa. After her work at the plate Troyer got going in the circle holding Durant down until the fourth when Aubrey Bland led off the inning with a double and Kelly Alexander singled to drive her in and cut the Mid-Prairie lead to 2-1. The Golden Hawks got a big insurance run in the sixth when Emily Cayton came home on an RBI single by Ashley Sojka. Troyer would allow nothing else the rest of the way in recording the two run win. After the game Head Coach Kara Beatty talked about play against a quality opponent

“I think by far this is the best game all the way around. We pitched really well, we had great defense, and the hitting was unbelievable, best hitting we’ve had all year,” Beatty said. “I knew that she would provide the power for us, just short swings tot he ball, use her power at contact and extend it through, and they all did it, 1-9.”

With the sweep Mid-Prairie is now 20-10 on the year and atop the RVC south division with a 12-2 record. The Golden Hawks travel to Tipton to play the Tigers and North Cedar in a make up conference round robin.
