Residents of Wellman are being warned not to give tap water to infants under six months old. This includes using it in baby formula. On Thursday, the results of a water sample showed unsafe levels of nitrite in the drinking water. This only applies to infants under six months old due to the risk of serious illness or death. Symptoms include shortness of breath or blue baby syndrome. Do not attempt to boil, freeze or filter the water, as none of those will reduce nitrite levels. Additional testing is being done, but results will not be available until Wednesday, July 9th. Adults and children older than six months can drink the tap water, however, if you are pregnant or specific health conditions, consult a doctor.
