The City of Kalona is taking action in response to rain that flooded basements, yards and streets last week. At Monday’s meeting, the city council agreed to focus on the area hardest hit by flash flooding caused by the 10 inches of rain that fell between Sunday, June 29th and Monday, June 30th. The council directed city staff to develop a plan for E Place north of Highway 22 and adjacent to Mid-Prairie Middle School. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says they’re considering an earth berm that would protect homes and property by retaining flood waters.
