The Mid-Prairie softball team opens up the 2014 state softball tournament today with the familiar foe of East Marshall.
The Golden Hawks have split with the Mustangs the past two years at the state tournament in the fifth place game, but this year meet in the first round of play.
Mid-Prairie is coming off of beating the No. 1 team in the state. Amber Kral continues to lead the team in a big way with a .574 average, 55 RBI’s. 10 homeruns and 12 doubles as a sophomore, and her fellow classmate Alex Rath is second on the team with a .547 average and 50 runs scored. Taylor Kurtz is the pitcher in the circle with a 16-4 record, 2.55 ERA, 90 strikeouts and beating the No. 1 team in the state under her belt.
East Marshall is the No. 2 team in the state at 32-3 and has only lost to one team in class 3A all year. Every bat in their lineup hits over .300, and seven hit at least a third of the time. Mariah Fritz is the top bat with a .482 average and 21 RBI’s, while the power comes from Taylor Fricke with a .388 average and Ashley Allen with a .333 average, and both with eight homers on the season. In the circle is Frtiz with a 25-1 record, 1.03 ERA, 221 strikeouts and opponents hit just .153 against her.
