Number two East Marshall ended Mid-Prairie’s state championship bid Monday morning in Ft. Dodge with a 4-3 state quarterfinal win. The Mustangs got on the board with one run on the first inning when Taylor Fricke singled softly to left field to drive in MacKenzie Andrews. East Marshall added to their lead Ashley Allen smacked a two run homer to make it 3-0 Mustangs in the third. Mid-Prairie got their first hit and first run of the morning in the fifth when Ali Naylor led off with a double and Maddie Zahradnek came in on an Alex Rath RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. East Marshall answered with a Sophia Grego solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to put the lead back to 4-1. Mid-Prairie was turned away in the top of the sixth when the Hawks had runners on second and third and Ali Naylor was robbed of a base hit on a diving play by third baseman Maci Fritz.
Mid-Prairie put together a furious seventh inning rally as Chelsea Kral led off with a single through the middle. Following a sacrifice Rath came up with an RBI single to drive in courtesy runner Amanda Miller to make the score 4-2. Lexi Duwa singled to bring the go ahead run to the plate in Amber Kral who also singled, driving in Rath to make the score 4-3. On the play a relay throw cut down the tying Mid-Prairie run, leaving Kral at first with two outs for Taylor Kurtz. East Marshall starter Mariah Fritz struck out Kurtz to secure the one run win.
Fritz recorded the win for East Marshall going seven innings, allowing six hits, three runs, walking five and striking out four. Kurtz took the loss for Mid-Prairie going six innings, allowing six hits, four runs, and striking out two. The Hawks were led at the plate by Rath who went two for four with 2RBI. Mid-Prairie falls to 25-11 and will be in consolation action Tuesday morning at 9AM against #13 West Burlington who fell to #9 Bondurant-Farrar 9-4.
