A human case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Iowa. The Iowa Department of Public Health announced the first case of the year is an adult male from Clay County who is recovering at this time. West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquitoes and the best way to prevent the virus is to use insect repellent when outdoors and eliminate mosquito breeding areas. Danielle Pettit-Majewski, Washington County Public Health Director, recommends bug repellant that containts DEET on anyone over two months of age.

Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water, such as buckets, cans, pool covers and pet water dishes. ALso water in bird baths should be changed regularly.
