Motorists should keep an eye out for cyclists in northern Washington County today. The Iowa State Road Race Championships is held annually in the county, and begins and ends in Riverside. The 32 mile course will have contestants take Riverside Road to G36 then over to Vine Avenue before heading back to town on Highway 22. Registration has been moved from Hall Park, where the city is holding River Palooza, to Railroad Park. Participants can signup between 8:30 and the start of the first race at 10.

Local competitors who have already signed up include Washington residents Alijah Beatty, Tianah Ryan and Richard Gilmore as well as Landon Beachy of Kalona. It isn’t just Iowans taking part. The race is drawing enthusiasts from Wisconsin, Kansas and Arkansas.

Race organizer Rick Hopson says they expect 200 cyclists this year, the amount they had last year. He says he would expect all riders to be back by 3pm. Rain is in the forecast, but that won’t cancel the event. However, if there’s strong winds or lightning it will be canceled.
