In a special session meeting last night the Washington City Council discussed the rental inspection and property maintenance codes. Chapter 147 regarding rental inspections is only for rental properties and Chapter 157 property maintenance is for all residential properties in the City of Washington.

Many landlords spoke against portions of the rental inspection ordinance. Councilmember Kathy Salazar presented a report regarding the ordinances the subcommittee had drafted. She explained the goal was to focus on health, safety and well-being. Randy Payne suggested having a grandfather clause. Tom Billups provided an analogy for the code saying the state inspects restaurant kitchens which are like rental properties in that they generate profit while a kitchen is like personal property.
