It was discovered this summer that some Washington county employees have been paid too much for overtime. Sheriff Jerry Dunbar explained the problem was noticed when deputies made a schedule change in May. The sheriff’s office then met with the auditor’s office and found the communications office had the same issue. Dunbar stated after further investigation, it was determined when a software change was made in 2010 the issue began for the communications department and since May for deputies.

Dunbar states county officials will meet next week to discuss how to address the problem. He says it was unfortunate and unintentional but the money will have to come back to the county. Auditor Dan Widmer added he has contacted the State Auditor for input on the matter.

The total amount of overpaid funds was not available but it was stated for communications the total amount of pay for overtime during the past four years has been between $2,000 and $5,000 each year. Also, approximately five deputies were overpaid. KCII News will bring you more information as it becomes official.
