A study has been proposed that would determine if buildings in Wayland and Jefferson Township qualify for placement on the National Register of Historic Places. The Henry County Historical Society is applying for a grant through the Historical Resource Development Grant program that would finance a reconnaissance survey in those communities.
According to chairperson of the group, Caroline Lehman, the survey will identify every structure that are 50 years or older. She says since that includes everything from homes to chicken coops, this will be a lengthy process.
The Historical Society was recently able to get Camp Harlan and Camp McKean placed on the National Register. The camps located in Mount Pleasant were used as training grounds during the Civil War.
