Watermelons, muskmelons and honeydews are ripening and may be ready for harvest. Watermelons are ready to be picked when the underside or “belly” turns from a greenish white to yellow. Also, when harvesting watermelons, leave about two inches of the stem on the fruit and they can be stored at room temperature for about a week. Muskmelons or cantaloupe are mature when the melon pulls easily from the stem. Cantaloupe can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. And honeydews are ready to be picked when there is a slight softening of the blossom end of the fruit, the end opposite of the stem and there may be a subtle change in color. They can be stored for two to three weeks at about 45 degrees.
