The opening of Lake Darling State Park is predicted to be great for business in Washington County. An Iowa State University Center for Ag & Rural Development study estimates visitors to the lake and park will spend approximately $8.5 million in the area annually. According to Chad Dolan, Iowa DNR Fisheries Biologist stationed at Lake Darling, that study’s findings are based on population, and looked at potential spending on everything from a pack of gum to a new boat.

Ed Raber, Washington Economic Development Director, shares business has been down in Brighton for years, and they expect the opening to turn things around. He adds businesses in nearby towns like Washington, Fairfield and Wayland will also benefit financially.

Brighton business Camper’s Corner is currently closed, but owner Jim Dickinson is planning to open backup in the spring. Dickinson says it’s been a long haul, but with the lake finished, it’s clear it was well worth the wait.
