The Kalona City Council has taken the first step toward raising the town’s sewer rates. The first reading of the ordinance amendment was held at this week’s meeting.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says their sewer rate would go from $2.80 per thousand gallons to $2.85, while the flat fee would increase a dollar to $12 under this proposal.

Schlabaugh adds a homeowner using 9,000 gallons a month would see an increase of $1.40 on their bill.

Two more readings will be held before the increase takes effect.
