Rental inspections and property maintenance standards for the City of Washington are the only agenda items for tonight’s city council meeting. A committee of area residents, landlords, tenants and council members drafted an ordinance which will be considered at tonight’s meeting. The draft states the purpose is to provide minimum quality standards for all residential rental dwellings, to establish a program for regular rental inspections and to protect the welfare of residents. Under the drafted ordinance all rental properties will be registered with the city and regular inspections of each rental will be done every three years or upon request.

Also, the ordinance outlines the responsiblities of landlords and tenants, including maintenance of the structure, upkeep of fire protection systems and appliances, and sanitary requirements.
