Fall is the time to harvest apples in Iowa. According to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists, the harvest period for apples depends on the type of apple. For example, Jonathan apples are normally harvested in mid-September and Red Delicious apples are normally ready to be picked in late September. Apples are ready to be picked when they are firm, crisp, juicy and well-colored. Although, color alone is not a reliable indicator of maturity for the fruit. Also, use the largest apples first as they don’t store as well as smaller apples.
