The Washington Demons grabbed their first win of the season against Marion last night, but what was a good lead turned into a bit of a nail biter.

Washington and Marion played to a stalemate in the first quarter despite some pretty good offense by both teams, and the Demons dominating in the possession game. In the second quarter the Demons had multiple chances to score, including a forced fumble by Thomas Bump who knocked down an option toss and the Demons recovered it on the Marion 10 yard line. The Demons moved 36 yards in the wrong direction though and couldn’t score.

Bump was not denied, getting through the line again and forcing his second fumble of the night to give the Demons great field position once again and this time the Demons did their thing, getting to the one yard line for Daryn Seibelius to put it in and make it 7-0. The Demons scored again with just 46 second left to go in the second quarter before Seibelius hooked up with Jack Giardino for a 24 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 at half.

Marion came out of the locker room fired up, as they scored twice on their first two possessions but missed their second PAT after a delay of game and made it 14-13. Washington got some insurance though, as Bryce Rickey got his first touchdown of the year off an eight yard run, and the Demons extended the lead a little more with another Seibelius one yard run to make it 28-13. Washington struck one more time with a 39 yard touchdown pass over the middle from Seibelius to Jacob Hennigan after a forced fumble by Bump gave the Demons great field position to make it 35-13.

Marion did not quit though as Washington brought in the reserves a bit early, and they marched down the field and scored late in the fourth to make it 35-19 after another missed field goal off of a holding call. The Indians then onsided the ball and got it right back, made another charge down the field and scored again quickly to make it 35-25 off of the missed two point conversion. On the ensuing onside kick, the Demons recovered and ran out the clock for the win.

Demon head coach Garrison Carter said he felt that everything ran smoother in this one than against Pella.
