Deaths that occurred in Fairfield over the weekend are under investigation. At around 1:40 Sunday afternoon, the Fairfield Police Department received a report of an abandoned vehicle belonging to a missing man from Illinois. It was suspected that the male had forced his way into a vacant building in the 2100 block of South Main Street near the vehicle, and was possibly armed. It was also believed he was a threat to himself or others. Police blocked off portions of main street and attempted to negotiate with the individual, but failed to make contact. Officers found the unidentified man’s body after entering the building. No weapons or evidence of a suspicious death were found inside. The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Earlier that day, at around 4:15 a.m., a person was struck and killed by a train within Fairfield city limits. Names are not being released at this time.

The Fairfield Police Department was assisted in these separate cases by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, the Burlington Northern – Santa Fe Railroad Police and officials, the State Medical Examiner’s Office, Midwest Ambulance Service and the Fairfield Fire Department.
