Enterovirus D68 is causing illness in Iowa and other Midwestern states, although since it is not a reportable disease in the U.S. the number of cases is not tracked. Lynn Fisher, RN, with Washington County Public Health explains symptoms include usual cold symptoms, such as a runny nose and cough, but as it gets more severe some people experience wheezing. The virus was first documented in 1962 and there is no vaccine or specific treatment for it. Director of Washington County Public Health, Danielle Pettit-Majewski, adds people in the community should wash their hands with hot soapy water, cover their coughs and stay home when ill.
