A virus called Enterovirus-D68, or EV-D68, is causing illness in Iowa and has caused out breaks in other Midwestern states including Illinois, Ohio and Kansas, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. The virus often begins like a cold, with symptoms including coughing and wheezing with most people recovering at home however, some people may be hospitalized with severe respiratory illness. According to IDPH, the virus appears to spread through close contact with infected people and there is no vaccine or medication available. It is recommended that those showing symptoms drink plenty of fluids, rest and stay home so you do not spread the virus. Enteroviruses are very common with more than 100 types and an estimated 10 to 15 million infections in the U.S. annually.
