One fatality was reported in yesterday’s fire that engulfed a cabin southeast of Washington. The subject is presumed to be male and is unidentified at this time according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Jerry Dunbar explains the office is investigating the death as suspicious, as is protocol for all deaths, until cause is determined. He adds, due to damage to the body from the fire, identification is taking longer than normal.

The fire occurred Thursday morning at 2585 275th Street, about three miles southeast of Washington. The wooden structure had a metal roof and all but one wall was leveled as firefighters fought the blaze yesterday. Washington Fire Department, Ainsworth Fire Department, Washington County Sheriff’s personnel, the State Fire Marshal and Alliant Energy responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and authorities have spoken with family of the person who lived at the residence.
