The Iowa Supreme Court has approved the suspension of a judge who showed up to work drunk. District Associate Judge Emily Susan Dean’s thirty day suspension without pay begins Saturday.

Judge Dean was initially suspended after arriving to a hearing on May 9th, 2012 at the Henry County Courthouse intoxicated and physically unable to take the bench. She was reinstated later that year after a monitoring agreement was approved that required her to receive treatment and provide random urine samples.

The Iowa Commission on Judicial Qualifications said in their request for the suspension that the punishment is meant to protect the integrity of and respect for the judicial system.
