Kalona residents will see a slight increase to their sewer bill next month. The Kalona City Council held the second reading, and waived the third, of the ordinance amendment at their meeting Tuesday. The sewer rate per thousand gallons is increasing by a nickel to $2.85, while the flat fee is going from $11 to $12. According to City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh, the increase was in response to a new requirement for cities taking out State Revolving Fund loans. Kalona has taken advantage of those loans for multiple projects, including the current relining of problem areas in the sewer system. The amendment takes effect October 1st.
