As fall progresses, now is the time to establish a lawn from seed in Iowa, according to Iowa State University horticulturists. Growing grass should have less competition in the fall, as few weeds germinate at this time and once the seeds germinate, the warm days and cool nights promote turfgrass growth. If seeding a lawn, Kentucky bluegrass is recommended for sunny areas while seed mixes are suggested for shaded yards. Geoff Proffitt with Hedge Above Lawn Care and Landscape reminds property owners to clear the lawn of leaves and prune perennials before winter arrives. He adds grass should be cut short before winter.
