The Demon volleyball team’s early season struggles haven’t phased its most optimistic player.

During Washington’s 3-12 start to the season, senior Lauren Swan has often been smiling, and has been encouraging her fellow teammates on the floor. Swan says being part of the varsity team since she was a sophomore helped her become the leader she is today.

“The seniors were always encouraging me and I know how great that felt.” Swan said, “I know that’s what I want people to do, so that’s what I do.”

The Demons were able to snap their recent losing streak in Ottumwa on Saturday, defeating Albia in three sets (21-12, 15-21,-11-15). Head coach Julliana Berg says one thing she is working on is making sure the game is more fun for the girls.

“Let’s not make this be work or a burden.” Berg said, “Let’s just get out there and have a good time. That’s when they play the best.”

Berg has demonstrated this by holding more scrimmages in practice, and having the girls compete to see who has to do certain drills. Tonight, the Demons will look to have more fun on the court as they head south to Fort Madison high school for a match up with the Bloodhounds.

Swan says she believes better days are ahead for her and the Demons.

“There is so much talent on the team.” Swan said, “We just need to find a way to make it come together to get wins.”

The Demons and Bloodhounds will face off with JV starting at 5:45 p.m. and the varsity beginning at 7:30 p.m. from Fort Madison High School.
