In the decade that he has been the head football coach, Columbus’s Jeff Martin says he has never seen a better team win than he did last Friday against Wapello.Columbus was able to even their 2014 record at 2-2 with a 27-14 win over the Wapello Indians. On this week’s Jet Physical Therapy Coaches Corner, coach Martin says momentum in the game shifted right before halftime.

“Last play of the half Carter Colby, our quarterback, threw a 27 touchdown pass to Chase Finke.” Martin said, “Chase is a senior wide out for us and made an unbelievable catch in the corner of the endzone. Great throw, tight window and he got one foot down as the buzzer sounded.”

The score would make it an 8-6 Wapello lead at the break. Columbus would outscore the Indian’s 21-6 in the final two quarters to earn the victory. Colby would finish 7-14 passing for 82 yards and the touchdown pass to Finke. Running back Maurcio Rameriez had a team high 222 yards rushing and three touchdowns to pace the Wildcat offense. Ramierz would collect an interception defensively in the victory. This week Columbus will host an unfamiliar foe in the 0-4 West Marshall Trojans. Martin says Columbus has never played West Marshall before, but from what understands the Trojan’s have a rich football history.

“They have (won) a state championship before, they were state quarter finalist in Class 2A .” Martin said, “Historically they are a good football team.”

Martin did say it appears the Trojan’s are down this year, having not won a game through the first four weeks of the season. Columbus will travel two and a half hours Friday for a match up with the West Marshall Trojans.
