The Wireless Emergency Notification System, or WENS, which is currently operated locally may be taken over by the state. Yesterday, Washington County Supervisor Richard Young said, Washington and Keokuk Counties Emergency Management Coordinator presented an agreement at the recent emergency management meeting that came from the state. The board tabled the agreement which states the commission requests access to the Statewide Mass Notification and Local Emergency Messaging System.

Currently, the county communications office which is directed by 911 supervisor Cara Sorrells oversees the local use of the notification system. The system is used for various purposes, including severe weather and Amber Alerts. KCII News will bring you more information as it becomes official.
