Last year, 112 Iowans were saved by properly working smoke detectors. So far this year, 30 people in Iowa have died in fire related incidents. This week is National Fire Prevention Week. According to the National Fire Protection Association, two-thirds of home fire deaths occurred in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms in 2005 to 2009. Residents are reminded to check smoke detectors monthly by pushing the test button.

Also, the State Fire Marshal recommends having an escape plan for your family with at least two ways out of every room. The escape plans should be practiced twice a year. For more fire safety information click here.
