On a night where the Demons were short on running backs, senior Jacob Heniegan proved to be the only running back Washington needed last night in Mount Pleasant.

As you heard Friday night on FM 106.1 KCII and online KCIIradio.com, Washington rushed for 327 yards and four touchdowns as the Demons beat the Panthers 45-7. Hennigan accounted for 273 of those rushing yards and three of those touchdowns Hennigan says since he has returned to the backfield, the Demons have started to see their running back depth shrink.

“We have lost some in different ways, so I have been getting a chance to carry the ball a lot.” Hennigan said, “And our (Offensive) line has been phenomenal. They have been making holes and making my job easy. ”

Junior Bryce Rickey was sidelined with a shoulder injury, while senior Joe Smith was not in attendance. Head football coach Garrison Carter said the game changed for good late in the first half.

“(The) game obviously really swung when our defense had not one but two goal line stands in a row after the penalty.” Carter said, “The Henny (Hennigan) broke off that long run after that and we were off and running.”

Late in the second quarter, the Panthers failed to score any points during eight straight plays at the Demon’s goal line. On the ensuing offensive possession, from their one yard line, Washington handed the ball to Hennigan three times and  took the Demons into the end zone right before halftime to extend the lead to 28-7.

It was a quiet night for Daryn Sebelius, who had just 95 yards of total offense and a rushing touchdown in the blowout.

The win improves Washington to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in district play. The victory was the third straight for the Demons, who have all but clinched a spot in the postseason. Up next is Washington’s Senior Night game with Davenport Assumption at Case Field next Friday. Coverage begins with the Washington Hyvee Pregame Show at 7 p.m. Friday evening on FM 106.1 and online at KCIIradio.com.
