Iowa’s flu activity is slowly increasing but remains sporadic at this time with two strains circulating. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, this season’s flu vaccines cover three or four strains of the flu depending on the vaccine you receive. IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk says early identification of several strains in the state may indicate the upcoming influenza season could be more severe than typical.

The flu has been confirmed in Southeast Iowa, with a confirmed case of the type B strain in Washington County. Cases of the flu have also been confirmed in Henry and Johnson counties.

Annual flu vaccinations are recommended to protect individuals and the community as a whole. Also, remember to practice good hand hygiene and stay home when sick.
