The first case of influenza has been confirmed in Washington County by the State Hygienic Laboratory. Lynn Fisher, RN with Washington County Public Health, reports the strain identified was the type B strain. Flu vaccinations are recommended to protetct individuals and the community as a whole against the flu each year and about two weeks after the vaccination antibodies provide protection against influenza. Some people are at a higher risk of complications due to influenza and those include children between six months and 18 years of age, pregnant women, people 50 years and older, anyone with chronic medical conditions and those who live in nursing homes.

It is also recommended to practice good hand hygiene, get a flu shot annually, and stay home when you are sick.
