The U.S. Energy Administration’s latest energy and winter fuel outlook projects slightly lower average household natural gas and electic heating costs than last year. As temperatures drop and winter approaches, Iowans are reminded there is the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), the Weatherization Assistance Program, and Iowa’s winter disconnection moratorium law. LIHEAP is a federal program which provides low-income Iowans funds to cover part of their winter energy bills.

For example, a household with two annual incomes below $31,460 total may qualify for assistance. Applications for energy assistance are accepted from November 1st to April 30th. Washington County residents should contact Hawkeye Area Community Action at 653-7275.
