The Highland Huskies’ volleyball season came to an abrupt close Tuesday evening.

The Huskies hosted the Pekin Panthers in the first round of the Class 2A Region 8 tournament yesterday evening. For a second time this season, the Panthers dropped the Huskies in straight sets (24-26, 14-25, 24-26) to end their season.

Highland head coach Chris Rath said at the end of the day, the Huskies struggled to control their errors, “We got to the point where our servers got better, but we just had some key errors at wrong times. I think that’s the hard part. I think they wanted it as bad as Pekin, it was just us trying to control our errors.”

With the win, Pekin advances to the regional quarterfinal next Tuesday against the rated West Branch Bears at West Branch. The loss ends Highland’s season at 15-14 overall. The Huskies enter the off-season looking to replace 10 seniors off this year’s squad.
