October is National Pork Month and the hog industry is a big part of the area economy. Washington County has the second highest number of hogs per county in the state, following only Sioux County. According to the United States Department of Agriculture 2012 Census, Washington County had 986,774 hogs which equals five percent of the state’s inventory. The nearly one million hogs are found on 161 farms across the county. In total, Iowa had 20.4 million hogs in 2012.
