The Sigourney Savage volleyball team opens up their playoff run this evening.

The 11-11 Savages face the 1-21 Maharishi Pioneers in a Class 1A Region 8 matchup. Sigourney enters the postseason after sweeping their final two conference matches with Montezuma and North Mahaska last week. Sigourney head coach Chris Carter feels the competition they have faced over the season have prepared her team for the regional run.

“At the Mid-Prairie Tournament (Hawks Tourney) we played some good teams.” Carter said, “Even at Washington, we played Wilton, Wapello, and Keota and played all of them to three matches. We have held our own against some good teams this year.”

The Savages top offensive threat is senior Jordan Carter. Carter comes into the postseason with a team leading 311 kills. Only one other Savage player, junior Sierra Davis (102), has more than 100 kills. Carter also leads Sigourney with 217 digs, while freshman Leah Carter leads the Savages with 465 assists. The winner of Sigourney and Maharishi advances to face Winfield-Mount Union in the regional quarterfinals next Tuesday in Winfield.
