Washington senior Daryn Sebelius uses Solon disappointment to fuel battle against Fort Madison. Washington’s week five matchup with the Solon Spartans was one Sebelius wishes he could forget.

The Demons’ starting quarterback collected 211 yards of total offense, but turned the ball over three different times in the Spartans 28-17 win over Washington. The performance ate at Sebelius all of last week.

“Those two interceptions and fumble, I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.” Sebelius said, “That just motivated me during practice. I kept thinking about it before the game and how I wasn’t going to let it happen again.”

As you heard on FM 106.1 KCII and online at KCIIradio.com, homecoming turned out to be a night Sebelius will never forget. He collected 425 yards of total offense (242 passing yards, 197 rushing yards) and scored six first half touchdowns (five passing) in the Demons 65-20 homecoming rout of the Fort Madison Bloodhounds.

Demon head football coach Garrison Carter talked about making a good impression of the alumni in town. “The greatest thing about homecoming is that you have all these 10 year reunions, 25 year reunions, 50 year reunions coming back and watching the game.” Carter said, “It’s the only time they will ever see you play football. You get a chance to make an impression on somebody and you only get one time to do it. You think Daryn (Sebelius) made an impression on somebody tonight?”

The best part of Sebelius’ performance is the amount of people he included in the offense. At least five different Demons had a reception, with Thomas Bump (2 TD), Dakota Suechan (2 TD), and Jack Giardino (1 TD) catching touchdowns in the victory. The win improves the Demons to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in district play. Coach Carter says the last three games of the season will really gauge where this team is at.

“You look at our record we are 3-3, we have fallen to three top ten opponents.” Carter said, “Its hard to gauge where we are at. Throw week one out maybe because we come out against the number one team in the state with a new offense, new system, a little shell shocked. We lost those other two games but we were right there. Obviously we need to win them, good football teams win them, but I feel we are going in the right direction.”

Washington will continue district play this Friday evening as they head to Keokuk for a matchup with the Chiefs. Coverage begins with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 7 p.m. on FM 106.1 and KCIIradio.com.
