The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks will face arguably their toughest opponent this evening.

The 3-2 Golden Hawks will be on the road tonight as they will travel to Iowa County for a matchup with the 5-0 Williamsburg Raiders. Mid-Prairie comes into the matchup on a three game winning streak after the Golden Hawks scored the final 18 points in their 38-20 win last Friday against Sigourney-Keota. Junior Ryan Cortum had a big day passing the ball against the Cobras, throwing for 225 yards and four touchdowns in the victory.

This will be the first time Mid-Prairie will face Williamsburg on the football field as the Raiders dropped from Class 3A to 2A this season.  The Raiders have been a lethal offensive team, averaging over 33 points through the first five weeks of the season. Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanaugh says in order to have a chance to beat the Raiders, he will need to win to key areas of the game.

“Time of possession is important.” Cavanaugh said, “I think turnovers are also important. We can’t turn the ball over and (we) need to try and get a few picks or fumbles on defense.”

On the other side, Raider head football coach Curt Ritchie says he sees a lot of similarities between his football team and the Golden Hawks.

“I think they are similar to us in the fact that we have a lot of new faces out (on the field).” Ritchie said, “Coach Cavanaugh has done a nice job at developing guys and that’s definitely the case this year. You can just see them getting better and better as a football team.”

Mid-Prairie will look to spoil an undefeated season as the Golden Hawks face off against Williamsburg in the Raiders’ homecoming game. You can catch all the action beginning with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 7 o’clock on AM 1380, FM 102.5, and online KCIIradio.com.
