The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves volleyball team ran into early adversity during their match Thursday evening in Wayland.

The WACO Warriors were ahead 20-13 in game one, and 24-18 in game two, only to see both leads disappear as the Wolves would take the match in straight sets (25-23, 28-26, 25-22). Winfield-Mount Union head volleyball coach Dave Pieart says he was proud of his team’s comeback effort.

“It’s something we have been doing all year is coming back from large deficits.” Pieart said, “I wish we wouldn’t practice doing that so much in the games, but it beats the alternative.”

Pieart adds the Warrior’s height was a challenge for his teams, and said their defense came out strong in last night’s match. WACO volleyball coach Jay Coble says he couldn’t be more pleased with his girls’ effort.

“We went back in to coach (Chad) Edeker’s room after the match and said, ‘Yeah, we can be upset but this is the most proud I have been of this team all season long.'” Coble said, “And now we have set a bar for ourselves. Oh you remember how you played against Winfield (Mount Union)? That’s what I am going to demand from here on out.”

The win improves Winfield-Mount Union to 22-9 overall and have won six of their last seven matches. With the loss, WACO drops to 12-14 overall and extend their current losing steak to four games.
