The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves’ volleyball team opened up their postseason run Tuesday evening in Winfield against a recognizable postseason opponent. The Wolves welcomed the Sigourney Savages to town for a Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinal matchup.

The Wolves were challenged throughout the evening, and even dropped the second game, before prevailing in four sets (25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23). Senior Nicole Escher led the Wolves with 13 kills and 14 digs, while junior Caitlin Jamison had 28 assists in the win.

This is the third straight season the Sigourney Savages have ended against Winfield-Mount Union. They were swept out of the regional tournament by the Wolves in 2012 (25-27, 18-25, 23-25) and dropped a five set match (25-12, 25-23, 16-25, 25-27, 6-15) last October.

The victory improves Winfield-Mount Union to 24-9 overall. The Wolves advance to the regional semifinals, where they will face the top rated Holy Trinity Crusaders Friday evening in Fort Madison.
