The Jefferson County man who led a sheriff’s deputy on a high speed chase and eluded authorities for over a day is facing four felonies. Twenty-eight-year-old Tyler Craig Lind’s felony charges include 1st degree Arson, 2nd degree Arson and two counts of 3rd degree burglary. The Batavia man is also charged with Eluding and Illegal Conveyance of a firearm. He’s being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $50,000 cash only bond.

Early Sunday morning, Lind was involved in a high speed chase with a deputy who was responding to a complaint of someone spotlighting deer. After they both crashed in a ditch off of 190th Street north of Batavia, Lind got out of his truck armed with a long gun and turned on the deputy. In response, the deputy fired at Lind. The suspect fled the scene on foot which led to a search involving several law enforcement agencies.

According to Jefferson County Attorney Timothy Dille, between the time he escaped and the time he was arrested Monday morning, Lind set fire to a mobile home and outbuilding. He also broke into that same mobile home, as well as a garage and vehicle. The owner of the mobile home contacted authorities when he arrived at the residence and found Lind.

An investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has received assistance from the Fairfield Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the State Fire Marshall’s Office, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Washington Police Department, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Iowa State Patrol, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Reserves and the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office.

A criminal charge is and accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and if found guilty by a jury.
