A former city clerk in a small Keokuk County community will serve five years of probation for embezzling money. At her recent sentencing, 41-year-old Toni Lynn Miller was given a deferred judgment. In addition to probation, she was ordered to pay back the money she stole and pay the $7,000 for an investigation conducted by the State Auditor that looked into her misconduct.

The State Auditor released a report in May that stated Miller issued over $17,000 worth of unauthorized checks to herself between 2008 and 2013.

According to Keokuk County Attorney John Schroeder, if Miller doesn’t pay the $24,000 by the time her probation is over, she may lose her deferred judgment. Miller was initially charged with 1st degree theft, but pled guilty to second degree theft before her trial began last month.
