In high school girls’ basketball depth at the post position is hard to come by. Keota Eagle head girls basketball coach Jenny Hobbs believes her depth at the forward position is a major asset heading into the season.

“Our senior class is filled with post players,” Hobbs said, “Not necessarily tall, but big strong bodies that are more post players.”

The Eagles return seven seniors from last year’s 13-10 season. Hobbs says five of the seniors she considers post players including: Sierra Lyle (5’6), Maggie Baker (5’8), Madison Sheetz (5’9), Bree Reed (5’10) and Hannah Reed (6’0).

The depth inside allows Hobbs to be creative with how she will use her players this season. She has suggested playing Sheetz, a starting forward last season, at a wing position this year to help fill out the Eagles’ lineup.

Another thing going for the Keota girls’ basketball team is confidence. Most of the Eagle players just completed an 18-7 volleyball season, including going a perfect 10-0 in the South Iowa Cedar Conference. Hobbs, Keota’s assistant volleyball coach, says the success on the volleyball court has translated into a good start to the basketball season. “They are getting after each other, they are helping each other, they are talking about where they like the passes, and who is open when.” Hobbs said, “It’s just been a really smooth first week of practice and I am just excited for us to put on the uniform and play somebody.”

The Keota Eagles opened the regular season last night with a win against the Tri-County Thornberg Trojans 46-23. The Eagles return to the court Tuesday against the Lynnville-Sully Hawks in Sully.
