The Pekin Panthers’ football team resumes their playoff run this evening against a familiar foe.The undefeated Panthers welcome in the 7-3 Lisbon Lions to town for a Class A second round showdown. The Panthers and Lions were paired up in the same district in the 2012 and 2013 season, with the two teams spliting the games (Pekin won 27-6 in 2013).

Both teams enter the matchup after blowing out their first round opponent on Wednesday. Pekin defeated North Linn 62-13, while Lisbon shut out Lone Tree 40-0. A large reason for Pekin’s success this season on the gridiron has been the play of their offense. Pekin is fourth in the state in points scored this season (469). Sophomore Trevor Northup leads the Panther offense with 1881 total yards (1610 passing) with 28 total touchdowns (19 passing) to just one interception.

Lisbon comes into the matchup on a season long five game win, giving up 20 point or less in each game during the streak. Senior running back Benton Frey leads the Lions offensively with 955 yards rushing and 13 rushing touchdowns.

Tonight’s Class A second round matchup between Pekin and Lisbon kicks off at 7 p.m. in Packwood.
