The Winfield-Mount Union boys basketball team is entering their second year under head coach Brad Doerring.Record wise the Wolves were average under Doerring, finishing the 2013-14 season with an 11-11 mark. However, after back to back losing seasons, a .500 record was an encouraging sign.

Doerring wasn’t displeased with his team’s outcome during his first year as head coach. “I came in late in the summer and didn’t have any camps planned for the kids,” Doerring said, “I just knew I had a bunch of juniors returning, a couple of seniors, and we went from there.”

Two of Doerring’s juniors made the all-conference team, and return to lead the Wolves during the 2014-15 season. Garrett Baker averaged 10 points per game and 8.4 rebound per game as a junior, while his classmate Zach Davis averaged 10 points and made 71% of his free throws last year.

Winfield-Mount Union opens up the season with two road games this week. The Wolves travel to Packwood Tuesday evening for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference game with Pekin. Winfield-Mount Union ends the week Friday evening in Columbus Junction for a conference showdown with the Wildcats.
