The Iowa Mennonite basketball team is off to a strong start this year, going 5-2 into the new calendar year. The success of the IMS basketball program the past couple of decades has been in large part to coach Dwight Gingerich. Gingerich tailed his 600th win as a head coach with Saturday night’s against Winfield-Mt. Union.
What is unique is he got to experience the win with his son Eli Gingerich, the point guard for the IMS basketball team. Gingerich says his son has done a great job to responding well to being the son of a coach, “Eli has been tremendous, I couldn’t ask for a better situation than how he has responded.”
Eli Gingerich says the game of basketball is a big part of the relationship they share. “One big part of our lives is being able to relate to each other is basketball. And really grateful to have that and experience it with my dad.” Gingerich leads the team in points, averaging 18 points per game. IMS will next play at Hill Crest Union in Washington on Saturday, January 3rd.
