A handful of Mid-Prairie Middle School students were recognized by the City of Kalona for essays they wrote. The 250 word essays were written as part of the Iowa League of Cities annual contest which has 7th graders write about what they would do if they were mayor.

According to Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh, before they sent the essays to the League of Cities, they went through the 87 essays and selected four female and male students. The winners were announced at the City Council’s last meeting.

Schlabaugh sayss the 4th place prize was a Jr pass for the city pool, 3rd place was gift certificates from TSI Radio Shack, 2nd was a pool pass for the 2015 season and 1st was a one night stay at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort.
