With their 50-48 victory over Montezuma Monday evening, the Sigourney Savage’s boys’ basketball team (7-0 overall; 7-0 conference) matched their win total from the entire 2013-14 season at the end of the first half of this season.

The Savages, who finished last season 7-15, have a pair of juniors leading the conference in scoring. Matus Stevko leads the South Iowa Cedar Conference averaging 19.3 points per game, while Blaine Gretter is third in the conference in scoring, averaging 18.5 points per game. As a team, Sigourney is second in the conference in average points per game at 63 points.

Sigourney’s defense is another contributing factor to their early season success, holding teams to just 39.7 points per game. Sigourney held their opponents below 40 points on three separate occasions including holding Tri County Thornberg to 21 points in the Savage’s second game of the season.

Sigourney and Belle Plaine remain the only two undefeated boys’ teams in the South Iowa Cedar Conference. The Savages return to the court on Jan. 6, 2015 in a conference matchup at North Mahaska.
