As the holiday season winds down, people are reminded to take care of Christmas trees to avoid fires. The Iowa Department of Public Safety, reminds Iowans to get rid of live Christmas trees when they are dry. Also, make sure trees do not block an exit and have a safe distance from heat sources.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 230 home fires started with Christmas trees each year between 2007 and 2011. These fires cause an average of six deaths, 22 injuries and $18.3 million in property damage.

Also, remember to check for working smoke alarms. Last year in Iowa, properly working smoke detectors saved 112 lives and 217 lives were saved in 2012. This year across the state 39 people have died in fires, up from 26 last year.
