While decking the halls and decorating Christmas trees this month, keep safety in mind. According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 230 home fires started with Christmas trees each year between 2007 and 2011. These fires cause an average of six deaths, 22 injuries and $18.3 million in property damage.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety reminds Iowans to make sure trees are not blocking an exit and have distance from heat sources. Also, add water to live trees daily. When decorating a tree with lights remember to always turn them off before leaving home or going to bed.

After the holidays be sure to get rid of Christmas trees when they are dry.
