With the holidays, many people are traveling area highways and the Iowa Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to drive safely. Before starting a trip, make sure the vehicle is tuned up and in good shape for travel and leave early if possible to avoid peak traffic hours. Also, make sure everyone is buckled into seat belts and car seats properly. Do not use a cell phone while driving.

If travelling for an extended amount of time, take plenty of breaks to stay alert while driving. According to the DOT, 41 percent of fatal wrecks are single vehicle crashes occurring during the late night or early morning hours when drivers are tired or have consumed alcohol, or both.

And if there will be drinking at a holiday get-together have a designated driver.
